About this clinic
A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast with distinction, Professor O’Donnell completed his surgical training through the Northern Ireland Surgical Training Rotation, followed by a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, USA, where he was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery. He achieved the UEMS Vascular Gold Medal for first place in the European Board of Vascular Surgery Examination and holds a Medical Doctorate and Master of Medical Science in Education.
Professor O’Donnell has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, presented internationally, and remains actively involved in academic research, simulation training, and education. A Visiting Professor at Ulster University, he lectures widely and contributes to healthcare quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, including the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme.
His private practice reflects his enduring commitment to high-quality, patient-focused care, recognised by awards including Doctify’s 2023 Healthcare Professional of the Year (Patient Voice Award); 2024 Endovascular Surgeon of the Year (Belfast); 2025 Winner of Best Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon as well as Highly Commended for Cross-Border Collaboration at the 2026 All Island Private Healthcare Awards.
With over 20 years clinical experience, Professor Mark O'Donnell leads an established vascular surgery practice performing over 850 minimally invasive procedures for varicose veins each year with a high level of patient satisfaction (Doctify; TrustPilot; and Google).

After transitioning from the NHS to Private Practice, Professor O’Donnell no longer performs arterial surgery (Arterial Vascular Surgery Procedures are not performed in any independent healthcare facility in Northern Ireland).
Professor O’Donnell is able to assess patients presenting with lymphoedema.
Treatments and procedures
- Minimally invasive endovenous treatment of varicose veins under local anaesthetic called radiofrequency ablation (keyhole procedure using radiofrequency energy).
- Open operative surgery for varicose veins including phlebectomy/avulsions, ligation and stripping.
- Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy for symptomatic varicose veins.
- Microsclerotherapy for cosmetic varicose veins.
