What does a cholesterol blood test measure?
A full cholesterol blood test usually measures several related markers. Together, these give a better picture than total cholesterol alone.
Total cholesterol

Why your cholesterol result is not just “normal” or “abnormal”

What does high total cholesterol mean?

Do you need to fast before a cholesterol blood test?
Many cholesterol tests in the UK can now be done without fasting. NICE guidance states that before starting lipid modification therapy for primary prevention, at least one blood sample should be taken for a full lipid profile, including total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and that a fasting sample is not needed.

If you are on a statin or another lipid-lowering treatment, your clinician may repeat blood tests to check your cholesterol response and, in some cases, liver function. Do not stop treatment simply because your cholesterol improves; the improvement may be because the medicine is working.
